The Struggles of an Immigrant.

Updated: Dec 7, 2017

A Puerto Rico native beats the odds and challenges of being an immigrant and rises up to not only be a phenomenal teacher but an American citizen.

Miguel Antonio Castillo demonstrated that he can still end up the winner.

People fear that immigrants would steal job opportunities or even look towards crime if they are not making ends meet. Well that's not the case.
Most individuals migrate to the United States from their home country to America because of the opportunities and to move away from the violence that happens in their home countries or to give their children a better life. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immigration
Castillo was born in Puerto Rico and moved to the United States with his family at the age of nine, only having one dream; to become a teacher.
His parents struggled to make ends meet but they were determined to give their children a better life.
He believes that children have a great sense to adapt and to make friends quickly so that's why he felt like he did so well with socializing.
Although he was popular amongst his peers he still got bullied for being an immigrant, which always stuck with him. "I didn't speak exactly the same as them" Castillo said.
Even with that obstacle he never forgot his goal of wanting to become a teacher.
Castillo's professors stuck out to him when attending college. He had a fond individual admiration for all of them in little ways.
Although, Castillo constantly doubted himself that being an immigrant was going to lower his chances of being the professor he really wanted to be.
He never stopped believing in himself. As any human being, he faced adversities, family deaths and relationship issues.
Years later Castillo works at Penn State Harrisburg as a professor http://harrisburg.psu.edu/ . His goal and dream was accomplished. He worked at several universities before such as Scranton and Elizabethtown.
Both jobs weren't giving him a full time position. Until one day he got the phone call that changed his life.
He got a full time position he always worked for! What made the job even better was it gave him a chance to always stay connected to home, because he became a spanish teacher which was his original language he spoke.
Castillo is a daily reminder and role model to not only international students that attend Penn State Harrisburg or to his students, He is an example that shows even when the odds are against you, you can still be the winner.
